Paediatric Assessment Unit - Birmingham Heartlands Hospital
The brief required us to create a welcoming, friendly atmosphere using a sea theme for the newly refurbished unit and so a series of characters embarking on a sea voyage were created. The children could follow the story through the department and included a decorative frame wall with original pieces as well as vinyl prints.

Reception areas contain enhancements that are interactive and full of detail, enabling the children to be entertained whilst waiting for relatives or for initial treatments, as well as being introduced to the characters they may see along their journey through the unit.

The children are shown articles they would associate with an exciting voyage, including luggage packed up, compass and maps. The enhancements are created to fit within the space, in this case on top of radiators, making them appear to be part of the environment and, therefore, less distressing.

Five cubicles within the Puffin Ward were decorated with vinyl enhancements, with the puffin characters enjoying five fun activites, including balloon modelling, cake baking and relaxing reading. The designs use calming textures and colours to entertain the rooms, without making them oppressive.

A sixth cubicle designed as a bequest, the brief requesting us to centre the design around a family of kangaroos. By using similar textures to the puffins, the change in design fits in with the scheme and allows the enhancements to follow a new direction.
Children's Emergency Department - Royal Derby Hospital.
The brief for this project was to create a welcoming space, using enhancements that work with the environment to create a 'story' the children could follow around the department, beginning with exterior painted murals that direct patients into the unit. This scheme won the Creative Industries Network Award for Illustration 2010.
